If you have been following this blog and/or have visited my online shop, you know how close this organization is to my heart. I am a friend and proud supporter of Bullying.org. This organization was founded by Bill Belsey, shortly after a school shooting in a small quiet Canadian town called Taber in Alberta. The Taber shooting happened just days after the horrific Columbine High School shooting in Colorado. This organization is dedicated to Jason Lang, who lost his life in the Taber shooting and other victims of bullying.
Bullying.org is a collaborative project that has three goals;
- to help people understand that they are NOT ALONE in being bullied,
- to help people understand that being bullied is NOT THEIR FAULT, and
- to help people understand that there are many POSITIVE alternatives to dealing with bullying.
If you happen to be in New York City on May 18th 2012 - Friday, and want to contribute a little to this very wonderful cause, you may want to check out the first ever Anti-Bullying Gala to be held at SPiN NYC located at the Flatiron District. Product descriptions and reviews coming soon.
I started using Naruko products this year. For 10 years, I've been loyal to Japanese high-end skincare brand Shiseido. I've also experimented with US brands like Kiehl's and Origins, also super expensive European brands like Sisley and La Prairie. La Prairie's $300 cream, did not provide magical youthful results. Kiehl's was okay, but not too effective in correcting hyper pigmentation and does not really help depuff tired eyes. Shiseido is still the brand I go back to, after trying different products.
In terms of skincare, I would rely on Japanese beauty brands simply because they incorporate time-tested natural ingredients that really improves skin conditions and correct skin problems. For example, if you want to instantly correct dark under-eye circles, the Shiseido White Lucent eye cream, would do its promise within one week. If you want to improve skin elasticity and look more firm, the Shiseido Benefiance line would just make you appear younger. There is radiance in the skin, and makeup won't be a daily necessity. Of course, we have to consider, people are different, skin type, genetics, environment, weather, habits, stress also plays a role in your appearance especially the face and skin. Another great Japanese brand is Shu Uemura, who makes the best (very very best) oil makeup remover and best eye lash curlers in the world. You need to go to Tokyo to discover such facts.
Anyway, there is this new brand from Taiwan called Naruko, which has been raved by my favorite beauty bloggers, and featured endlessly by popular skin professionals in Asia. There must be something good about it. I did my scientific beauty research, also carefully studied the ingredients and its formulas. I am not an expert and I cannot really judge the product without trying it.
Naruko is one of the best skincare brands I've used. Their Narcissus Total Defense system, not only made my skin supple and dewy, it brightens, hydrates, and somehow corrected the little imperfections of the skin surface, like dry flakes, pimple-scars, or uneven skin tone. By the way, I don't have problematic skin and rarely gets pimples, unless it's the 'time of the month'. I have a good skin to begin with, but there are gradual improvements in overall skin texture. Since, I am already 33 years old, and the fact that I look younger than most 25 years old, there must be something great with the products I use. It is not genetics, because my 40 year-old husband religiously use Naruko appears 27 years old, is so amazingly hard to believe. No signs of stress, no signs of ageing, no blemishes, skin is just purely glowing. There are days that his skin looks so much better than mine.
We love Naruko. It is my holy grail (at the moment).
Yes, skin food can be expensive, but a great investment.

This photo was taken recently at Disneyland, in Anaheim California. She has no makeup in this photo, and photos don't do her any justice because she looks so much better, younger and Eurasian in person.
Am happy to be her daughter, although we don't look 100% alike, I got her petiteness and healthy-looking genes. I hope to look like her when I am in my 50's. My mom, like me also loves beauty and fashion. We can easily talk about makeup, BB creams, health products, and even fashion topics. She's also a health buff and a vegan-wannabe, just like me! My mom is now retired and resides in Toronto, Ontario. I blogged about her house full of flowers, here.
To my mom, thanks for reading my blog! Stay young and healthy! xoxo ;-)
This photo was taken in Los Angeles, California, with my mom. My grandmother resides in San Diego, California, while my mom resides in Toronto, Ontario.
Oh my granny! In my eyes, she's a blessed woman, who never worked a single minute of her life. She was a good housewife and a generous grandmother. She would mail me gifts, clothes, Shisedo products, and Chanel perfumes. She loves bags and at her young age of 84, she's quite fashionable. She has more bags than her grandchildren. She resides in San Diego, California. Yes, she's my southern California girl. Everytime I see her, she gives me stuff (she perceives me as poor little Kathy), and always always had to carry excess overweight baggage at the airport. 50% of my beauty products came from her. After I married, she would do the same to my husband. My husband never owned perfumes from Issey Miyake or Chanel, until he started receiving gifts from my grandmother. She's adorable!
Thanks amah! ( I call her amah, a Chinese word for grandmother). Stay active and happy!
To all the mothers following this blog, HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

Every year, the fashion industry announces the color of the year. For 2012, it is Tangerine Tango, which was announced in November last year. This year’s color is hard to not notice; as it is quite bold compared to the colors of the previous years, Honeysuckle for 2011 and Turquoise for 2010. To be precise, Tangerine Tango is Pantone color 17-1463.
It is reddish orange, which is very vibrant, and bursting with energy.
The beauty industry also embraced this year’s color with new products that are a bit daring and non-conventional. Surprisingly, as bold as it appears, Tangerine Tango is quite feminine in an exotic way. Hues of electrifying orange, corals, and red-oranges are must-haves for summer 2012. From nail lacquers, to lip glosses to cheek stains, orange is can be glamorous if worn correctly.
Here are some beauty products that will enliven your complexions and give you that extra dose of Tangerine Tango energy.
This cheek and lip stain is promoted as sheer mango in color, but in reality, it appears orange in the bottle and looks very good on the cheeks. The rich pop of orange color is very wearable and non-intimidating. It is actually universal and good for any skin tones. It is on the warm side, gives you a bit of a natural outdoor-girl look.
Tarte Amazonian Clay 12 Hour Blush in Tipsy Coral $25
Tarte’s award winning blushers are long-wearing and chemical-free. The shade Tipsy Coral, is a great orange blusher, that is a good alternative of your regular bronzer. The shade is not too strong, especially for women with warm skin tones. Although, it may not provide bronzing effects, this shade will give you a warm perk-me-up glow that will surely win compliments from fashionistas and even strangers. Visit the nearest Tarte counter or Sephora, and try this product. You will not regret it.
Dior Addict Ultra Gloss in Orange Pareo $28
This is a Limited Edition product from Dior’s 2012 Croisette Collection. This electrifying orange, with shimmering hues of tangerine will definitely make a statement. There are three reasons to love it. First, the shade is very warm with golden shimmers. Second, the shade is sheer with light pigmentation. Third, it looks very silky and natural when applied on the lips. Nothing close to neon orange, in fact it is very subtle and fresh. The Orange Pareo gloss contains micro-pearls that reflects light and provides a very dazzling, very demure finish. Dior is an expert with lip glosses. Available for a limited time only.
Dior 5 Couleurs Eyeshadow Croisette Edition in Aurora $60
This is a Limited Edition product from Dior’s 2012 Croisette Collection. The colors in this palette depict the warm sunset hues of the French Riviera, which is the inspiration of the Croisette Collection. The palette consists of 5 shades: sunset gold, metallic chocolate brown, highlighting pink, natural beige and electric copper orange. The shades would positively work with warm skin tones, especially the copper orange would look dazzling if paired with the gold. This palette is also wearable for cooler skin tones, since neutral shades of beige, brown and pink are included. Another great must-have from Dior this summer. Available for a limited time only.
Chanel Le Vernis in Holiday $25
This is a Limited Edition nail lacquer from Chanel’s 2012 summer collection. The Holiday, is a bright coral, that is on a reddish-orange side. Very appropriate for the summer, and would look glamorous on the toes, even if you’re wearing plain sandals. The shade is simple elegant, although, it can be dupable, the texture and quality of Chanel’s Le Vernis is very hard to pass up. Holiday is out for a limited time only.
Hope you’ll be energized and uplifted with these product suggestions. Tangerine Tango is the color of the year and what a happy color!

We celebrate Mother’s Day at the peak of spring, when New York City is blooming with flowers. Spring is the season of all things beautiful, colorful and alive. Most women love flowers, and the best gift we can give to our beloved mothers are things that can make them look and feel beautiful.
Here are some flower-inspired beauty gift ideas for your mom:
The Bouquet of a Thousand Flowers from the L’Occitane Pivoine Flora Collection ($68)
The Pivoine Flora Collection just came out in time, to celebrate the beauty of peonies this spring. The peony, also known as pivoine in France, is one of the sweetest smelling flowers you can ever imagine. The gift set called The Bouquet of a Thousand Flowers contains five (5) peony-filled beauty essentials that would make mom’s bathing experience luxurious and sweet.
- Pivoine Flora Eau de Toilette2.5 fl. oz
- Pivoine Flora Shower Gel fl. oz
- Pivoine Flora Beauty Milk 2.5 fl. oz
- Pivoine Flora Hand Cream 1 oz
- Bonne Mère Milk Soap 4.4 oz
The set is packaged in a special peony gift box, with a Mother's Day card included. You can purchase at any L’Occitane boutiques and online.
Daisy Eau So Fresh gift set by Marc Jacobs ($75)
The success of Marc Jacobs’ Daisy perfume contributed to the creation of Daisy Eau So Fresh, which is a whimsical version of the original Daisy. Although, it is part of the Daisy-themed series, this perfume doesn’t smell anything like Daisy. The scent of Daisy Eau So Fresh is fruity and less serious, with notes of natural raspberry, grapefruit, pear, violet, wild Rose, apple blossom, musks, cedarwood, and plum. This perfume will remind you of sunny fields and worry-free sunny days. Great for spring and also for summer. The packaging is so lovely with 6 daisy flowers attached to the cap. This would definitely bring happiness to your mom’s mood and add glamour to your mom’s vanity table.
The gift set includes: Eau de Toilette Spray 2.5 oz and Radiant Body Lotion 5.1 oz. Available at Sephora and ULTA.
Dior 5 Couleur Garden Edition eyeshadow palette ($59)
The palette Garden Roses Harmony #841 consists of 5 flower inspired hues of soft pinks, parma violet, silver and purple. This is a Collector’s edition from Dior’s 2012 Garden Party Spring Collection. The colors are on the shimmery and sheer side that delivers the freshest iridescent finish. This rose-embossed palette is very elegant and the ultra-feminine color combinations can work well for spring and summer.
Available for a limited time at Sephora.
MAC Powder Blush in Fleur Power ($20)
The name Fleur Power literally means Flower Power. This is a soft bright pinkish coral blush in satin finish, that is very wearable and very pretty for any skin tone. The blush powder is highly pigmented and matte, which applies smoothly with a face brush. The color is quite light for coral, and appears pinkish on the skin than in the pan. This type of pink would work for darker complexions, as well as fair skin tones. A universal product that will enhance the cheeks and add a youthful glow. Your mom would love it.
Crabtree & Evelyn Dusting Powder ($22)
Introduce your mom or wife to dusting powders. In the olden days, dusting powder is an after-bath ritual for many people. Not only it freshens the skin, it also softens the skin and absorbs sweat that causes unpleasant odor. Crabtree & Evelyn offers 4 flowerful scents of dusting powders; each provides talc-free formulas and softening ingredients such as mica and boron for that ultimate refreshing experience.
Available in Lavender, Rosewater, Iris and Lily scents at Crabtree & Evelyn stores and online.
Mother’s Day is celebrated in the US on May 13th. Something sweet, something small and something creative is okay. Remember, it’s the thought that counts. Any mother would love a child’s present, regardless of the price tag.

I will take pictures of her peonies when I visit my parents in Toronto. Most flowers usually are in full bloom in the summer. The spring flowers like tulips and daffodils have already bloomed in NY and can no longer be photographed.
For now, this is what we have at home in New York. After asking my husband's permission to post such personal photos. =)
On the left is a small flower patch, waiting for roses (late May), sunflowers (around July),and others I can't identify. We also have flowers that looks like sunflower but the petals are color pink and some white, those will also come out in July.
On the right, we have 2 flower trees called Peegee Hydrageas, which are blooming right now. Pretty early eh.
By the way, I didn't use a camera here, just my phone. Surprised that the photos look nice.
Our tulips have long withered. Tulip stems below. I blamed the squirrels for eating some of them. And this small plant is for pure decoration only, it is called Dianthus (I maybe wrong). They look like petunias but they can't be petunias.
A friend once asked me why we planted flowers instead of vegetables, since we cannot eat flowers. I answered in blank silence.
The beauty of flowers detoxify my mind and soul, what a joy to come home early in spring and enjoy a flowerful house, full of peace and serenity. Nothing beats that feeling. When the rest of the world enjoy the unnecessary competition and rat race, I just enjoy my secret garden. I certainly know how to enjoy natural beauties.
Just like an old Chinese proverb: When you have only two pennies left in the world, buy a loaf of bread with one, and a lily with the other.
Hope you can also grow a garden and help beautify this earth. Have a happy Friday and enjoy the weekend!
xoxo.

"Soul can function as a synonym for spirit, mind or self; scientific works, in particular, often consider 'soul' as a synonym for 'mind'.- Source: Encyclopædia Britannica. 2008. Retrieved 12 November 2008.
In other words, our mental well-being needs nourishment to align with our physical well-being, which affects our overall health, longevity, and even prosperity (not talking about money here). There really aren't any actual food for the soul, however, there are great books written by extraordinary individuals, that may positively help us improve our mental well-beings, and I'm not talking about academic books. These are just inspiring books, that focus on practical values, personal wisdom, simple truths and essence of life.
List of books for the soul with quotations:
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
A fable about following your dreams.
An allegorical novel, The Alchemist follows a young Andalusian shepherd named Santiago in his journey to Egypt, after having a recurring dream of finding treasure there.
“I don’t live in either my past or my future. I’m interested only in the present. If you can concentrate always on the present, you’ll be a happy man. Life will be a party for you, a grand festival, because life is the moment we’re living now.”
“Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of the search is a second’s encounter with God and with eternity.”
“Remember that wherever your heart is, there you will find your treasure.” You’ve got to find the treasure, so that everything you have learned along the way can make sense. “
The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz
A practical guide to personal freedom
The book is about finding one's own integrity, self-love, and peace by way of absolving oneself from responsibility for the woes of others. The Four Agreements are:
Be Impeccable With Your Word
Don't Take Anything Personally
Don't Make Assumptions
Always Do Your Best.
Ruiz also wrote a companion book to The Four Agreements. He then wrote several other books, including The Voice of Knowledge, Prayers, and The Mastery of Love.
The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
The Little Prince makes several profound and idealistic observations about life and human nature. For example, Saint-Exupéry tells of a fox meeting the young prince during his travels on Earth. The story's essence is contained in the lines uttered by the fox to the little prince:
On ne voit bien qu'avec le cœur. L'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux.
"One sees clearly only with the heart. What is essential is invisible to the eye."
Ce qui embellit le désert, dit le petit prince, c'est qu'il cache un puits quelque part...
"What makes the desert beautiful,is that somewhere it hides a well."
The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom
A novel that recounts the life and death of a maintenance man named Eddie. After dying while trying to save a little girl, Eddie finds himself in the afterlife where he encounters five people who significantly affected his life. Some quotes:
"People think of heaven as a paradise garden, a place where they can float on clouds and laze in rivers and mountains. But scenery without solice is meaningless." (p. 35)
"The human spirit knows, deep down, that all lives intersect. That death doesn’t just take someone, it misses someone else, and in the small distance between being taken and being missed, lives are changed." (p. 48)
"This is the greatest gift God can give you: to understand what happened in your life. To have it explained. It is the peace you have been searching for."(p. 35)
A Road Less Traveled by M. Scott Peck MD
I think this is one of the most inspiring books ever written. Mr. Peck also wrote: People of the Lie, the Hope for Healing Human Evil.
"To proceed very far through the desert, you must be willing to meet existential suffering and work it through. In order to do this, the attitude toward pain has to change. This happens when we accept the fact that everything that happens to us has been designed for our spiritual growth.”
These books are loaded with soul nourishing values that will help you get through life's obstacles, and live a fruitful journey on earth. I hope you can purchase them, read them and share with your loved ones.

Peonies are just so beautiful. If you have read my previous article: Flower-themed Mother's Day gift ideas, it is apparent that peonies can make any home a happy place to live in. The sight of blooming peonies provide a sense of serenity and its sweet scent can clear your worries away.
Every corner of our house deserve a vaseful of peonies. Every summer, the peony bushes in my mom's backyard in Toronto, would unapologetically bloom non-stop, giving us more than enough flowers to decorate our home for the season. They smell so sweet and yummy that entices giant ants and a bee colony to inhabit our garden. The harmless buzzy bees add colour to our backyard. I am grateful to witness the beauty of Mother Nature at home and in the backyard every summer.
This flower, as ordinary as it appears, has a gift of making any home beautiful. Also, its scent exudes a calming positive vibe.
Facts about peonies: In China, this flower was venerated as "king of flowers". In Greek mythology, this flower was once a beautiful nymph named Paeonia, who received so much attention from the gods that another jealous nymph turned her into a flower. Paeonia bloomed with a thousand petals.
In France, the Rivière family established the Crest Garden in the Drôme region of south France. The Crest Garden is home to 650 kinds of peonies and the sole supplier of L'Occitane's Pivoine Collection. Pivoine is the lovely French term for peony.
You can now experience the beauty of peonies in your skincare products. L'Occitane just came up with the Pivoine Collection.

Sorry, not the best iPhone shot, considering we usually appear 10x larger in camera, and this was taken around 6:30 am. Pardon my sleepy (but happy) demeanor.
Wouldn't normally post personal photo in this public blog, but you may want to sign-up for Bikram Yoga since beach season is coming up. An alternative of Bikram Yoga is Moksha Yoga.
"Moksha Hot Yoga was founded in Toronto, Canada in 2004 by yoga teachers Ted Grant and Jessica Robertson. Though a relative newcomer, Moksha has quickly gained popularity as over 30 affiliated studios have since opened worldwide, including in Canada, the United States, Switzerland, and the Caribbean. The Moksha method is a set series of about 40 poses done in a hot room. Moksha has strict "green" standards for keeping their studios environmentally friendly, including using sustainable building materials and natural cleansers. They are also committed to offering weekly low-cost classes and karma yoga opportunities to keep yoga classes more accessible." - Ann Pizer (About.com)

For Canadians, Correr es mi Destino, an informative blog of regular Canadian stuff on life, food, politics, snow, etc. is quite entertaining. The blogger Zhu (not Chinese) is a French born, immigrant to Canada, who tells stories and observations about her life in the great white north. My two mothers are flower ladies.
Old photos. These are hand-picked pink peonies and roses from my mom's backyard in Toronto. In spring/summer, our home (in Toronto) would be overflowing with fresh hand-picked flowers. At home in NY, am working on a rose garden with the help of my green-thumb mother-in-law. Hope it'll be as pretty as my mom's flower patches.
Every corner of our tiny house (including the washroom) has a vase filled with peonies. After a week, the flowers would dry and wither. The dried petals would be saved in a pouch and soaked in essential oils to make potpourri. The scents of potpourri would magically dissolve any toxic (hate, envy, greed, etc) elements in your mind. Food for my skin....all made from natural herbs, botanical extracts....Bonus: The Rose and Snow Fungus line has a heavenly scent of flowers.
My formula: Naruko day and night products + 8 to 10 hours of beauty sleep + bikram yoga + toxic-free life = looking 10+ years younger. These products are contributing factors of having clear bright dewy skin glow, and a stress-free appearance. Thank you Naruko.

It's another season, it's time to change our skincare products. I am finally trying the Narcissus Total Defense Series from Naruko, which received great reviews since it came out 2 to 3 years ago. I know, it's old news. Anyhow, Naruko's products are mostly light and suitable for spring weather. Naruko's products were shipped today, bought them all on sale, plus I received 2 complimentary BB creams, and other free samples from the Marjoram & Lavender line. They are generous with freebies.
Naruko is a Taiwanese skincare brand developed by Niu Er, a skincare specialist who used plant-based extracts, botanicals and herbal concoction in his products, designed for anti-aging, and environmental skin defense, also for balancing skin texture and hydration. He also popularized the Night Gellies, a type of gel mask that is applied as the final step of your skincare routine. The Night Gellies are known to lock the moisture of the skincare products, as well as protect the skin against very dry conditions.
The Narcissus skincare products main ingredients are: Narcissus bulb extract and Phytoferulin, which help fights free radical damage.
Their products are not expensive at all, compared to Shiseido or SKII.
Right to left: Night Repairing Dew $20USD, Moisturising Night Repair $21USD, and Night Serum $23.50USD.
Night Gelly $22USD...the cute backdrop is my Yoga mat =).
For daytime wear: BB Sunscreen SPF50 (free)
Unfortunately, the booklets that came with the products are all printed in Chinese....and I can only read 20% of the characters in the booklets. My Chinese reading skills needs improvement, lol. Although, ethnically speaking I have 75% Chinese blood, not all Chinese people can read Chinese characters especially in technical beauty or scientific context. I hope Naruko will print these in English in the future, if they aim to be global, or at least provide illustrations.
Overall, I trust this brand, love the eco-friendly packaging, and super love all natural products. 我愛 Naruko.

Press release:
“On vacation, you can wear all the colorful and casual clothing that you like, but you must always be elegant,” said Christian Dior. Inspired by the art de vivre of the French Riviera, the Dior Croisette Collection combines the peace of the French countryside with the splendour of Saint Tropez.
These locations have always been a prolific source of inspiration for Christian Dior. From Dior’s first swimsuit collections and seaside fashion creations in the Fifties to the current Cruise Collections, the French Riviera also embodies the brand’s most daring, fresh and colorful lines today.
Between the shimmering turquoise of the Mediterranean Sea and the sparkling gold of the sand, through soft coral and bikini pink, the Croisette reveals all its elegance and optimism in sunny and aquatic-inspired shades. The skin is warmed up and illuminated in a natural glow effect, while the eyes are dressed up with luminescent sunny shades or fresh azure blues. The lips are colorful and subtly sparkling while the nails complete the look with coral and blue shades inspired by the most glamorous emblems of the French Riviera.
